The African Union
The African Union is known as one of the most important and powerful intergovernmental organizations. The African Union is made up of 53 countries in Africa, the whole union is based off an already existing European Union. For this Union these countries have to work together even though there are many differences in language, culture, beliefs, race and geography. The goal of the Union is to improve the economical, political and social situation of the approximate billion people who live on the continent of Africa. Also with this union they swear to protect the rich cultures of Africa, which have been around for quite awhile.
The African Union is composed of all the independent countries of Africa, except for the country of Morocco. An interesting fact is that the country of South Sudan, the newest country of the African Union, joined just three weeks after achieving it's independence on July 28, 2011.
The African union was formed after the Organization of African Unity (OAU) brokeup in 2002. The OAU was initially formed to increase the European decolonization of and achieve independence for many new nations. Along with that, the OAU wanted to promote peaceful solutions to conflicts and raise the standard of living. Even though the OAU gave weapons to rebel and put an end to colonization, it was unsuccessful when trying to eliminate poverty. With that the leaders were seen as uncaring for the people dying of poverty. There were many civil wars were the OAU could not intervene. After the fall of apartheid, South Africa joined the OAU.
Years later a leader by the name of Muammar Gaddafi, encouraged the revival of the OAU. After several conventions to start it up again, in 2002 the Africa union was formed. I was decided that the headquarters for the African Union would be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. There are many languages of the African Union, even English being one of them. The leaders work together to promote education, peace, health, economic success, democracy, and human rights. The union strives especially to improve government and every day lives of human people in Africa. They provide ways to keep safe from common diseases that people are dying from everyday. It also helps by providing safer food to eat and safer water to drink. The Union also has power to intervene military wise, usually for peacekeeping forces. They have set out goals like to have a currency like the Euro by 2023. The Africa Union has done so much for Africa, but still there are so problems that still linger like the poverty is very high and there might still be some corrupt leaders in the Union.
